Re: [orca-list] OCR on Linux

My update on kies:

I am trying to change it so that one can have different ocr engines and
have them selectable.
I have it working with cuneiform now, but still have a few glitches which
I would like to sort out first.
Cuneiform seem to be the better engine between ocropus and cuneiform at
this point, but remember that ocropus is not an engine, but currently use
tesseract as its default engine.
The big advantage of Cuneiform over ocropus is the speed.
I will try to finish up the work on the kies stuff soon, but had quite a
few other things requiring attention, so it took longer than what I
thought.
People are welcome to write me off-list about this, since it boarders on
being off-topic for this list.
Kind regards, Willem

What ever scanner is supported by scanimage, the epsons work well.

If you plug your scanner in, reboot with the scanner on, and when linux
comes back up run the command:
scanimage -L
(as root, e.g. with sudo)

It should list your scanner, note the reboot is just for the sake of
ease, so you don't have to worry about restarting relevant init scripts
etc.

instructions for setting up any OCR application or let me know where
the instructions might be found.

Quite old, but should still work. Don't think the patch is required, and
tesseract can probably even be installed with apt...

Or just find a stable revision from svn if the latest doesn't compile.

Also think Wilim is changing the front end to use another ocr engine...

Dan.
