Hi,

I suppose the difference is that I keep my experimental programs in my own 
directory tree (a result from the fact that, in my office, all programs not 
installed by the system administrators have to be run from the user's 
directory tree).  So, I don't have to open up write permissions to the world 
in order to get the updates.
