I'm using iwconfig to set the ssid onto the device, just like NM does 
with the proof-of-concept patch applied. Perhaps that's the key here. 
Perhaps that's not normally required?

If this doesn't explain the situation. I'd be happy to post the debug 
info tonight(WGST). I don't have that particular laptop with me right now.
