Updating a displayed GtkImage widget

Hi all,
   I think I need to rephrase my previous post to this email list. I am 
trying to update a global GtkImage widget from within a timeout added to 
gtk_main(). How do I update the image in its winodw? I would like not to 
have to destroy anything but the image, and I dont want to exit gtk_main().
