It started with the birth of #gnome-hackers.

#gnome had a lot of "noise" (in this context = users looking for, and 
receiving, help), making it very hard for developers to have devel-type 
discussions in #gnome. So #gnome-hackers was formed, all the core 
developers stopped being on #gnome (as #gnome-hackers had the 
"interesting" discussions), and #gnome died.

IMHO, anyway.
