I realized that the saner approach would be using "File 🡒 Import…".
However, the "Import a single file" dialog really only allows selecting
one single file. And as maildir format is not supported, and as mbox
requires each message to be in a separate file, that's not an option.

Is there a reason that the dialog does not support selecting more than
one file, and Evolution then importing each file one after the other?
