I'm not 100% sure I understand your question, thus feel free to correct
me, but if you mean that you leave a folder, then return back and the
selected message is a different than which had been selected when you
left that folder, then this kind of thing works fine for me, especially
when I leave the folder when only a single message is selected. When
you leave the folder with multiple messages selected, or when the
selected message is moved away for some reason, like when some filters
move it out or such, then Evolution cannot restore the previous
selection and falls back to select the first message in the list.

Not sure to what the original poster refers either, but when I use a
filtered view (such as "Unread Messages" only) and I leave a folder
(where I had a message opened that had turned "Read" from "Unread"), go
to another folder, and then go back to the first folder, I very often
end up at the oldest unread message at the very bottom of the list (as
I sort by Date and have newest messages on top). 3.28.5.
