[Evolution] Slackware 8 and Evolution 0.12

hey guys

i've got 2 fresh-ish Slackware 8 installs.  I've installed the 4 source code
files from the gnome ftp site (bonobo 0.10. gal 0.9, gtkhtml 0.11.1,
evolution 0.12) and installed them without a hitch (except for the need of
putting down --prefix=/opt/gnome).

The question i have is, when i run evolution from a term window i receive a
nice error message "Cannot access the Evolution shell" and promptly quits.

... Help!
