I'm guessing it has something to do with the HAL deprecation.

I'm working on rewriting the hardware backend to use the more modern udev system, but it won't be ready for a couple of weeks probably. You can track my progress at https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=612616.

To get it working now, I would make sure your friend has HAL installed and running on your customer's computer.
