I can upgrade to 9 as you suggest or install open suse.

This machine is only used for AV purposes.

Distro choice is entirely up to your preference, Fedora, OpenSUSE and Ubuntu the 3 major distros all have the version of Banshee you are trying to compile packaged. Preupgrade will make the upgrade painless for you on Fedora, that would save you the trouble of compiling it by hand. There is an attempt to push Mono and dependent applications more aggressively to our stable repos, typically on release day we will have the newest version in our development repo and shortly thereafter in the updates-testing repo (where your input can help determine the speed at which it gets funnelled to stable so please do feel free to test and help out).

So pick what you are comfortable using, for Fedora I can help you, we also have most excellent community members keeping on top of Banshee for most other distros so you always will be able to get your fix in the most painfree manner.
