Since I have internet access almost anywhere I go, I keep my music and metadata on an NFS export.
It takes a bit to setup (LDAP, NFS, SSH, firewall rules, etc) but I can access my music from Linux / OS X (It should work with Windows, but don't really care to test it) using Banshee, Rhythmbox, Amarok, and iTunes from multiple machines.
