Re: [Tracker] Inquiry into work required to support removable media

as i may have poorly explained before, this would mostly be useful for
large external drives used on many machines (cutting duplication of
index) or having instant searchability on a machine that is new or
that you may never use again (such as a friend's computer).

in any case, could make it a prompt to store locally or on drive when
indexing begins

side note:
tracker-search-tool could also be changed to offer options to search
just the local db, just external db, or both together

I'ld prefer to have local db on the computer. This could let me search for
file in ALL my removable media without having them attached.

Jamie already has an idea of how to support removable media in
tracker. I'd like to see support for removable media added as soon as
possible and would gladly help out.

If anyone has any suggestions on removable-media support in tracker or
suggestions on how to start off writing a patch for this, please do
tell.

Thanks!

Can imagine a scenario where there is a writable removable drive (USB
drive) used on several different computers running tracker. rather
than the duplication of having it indexed on each computer, it may be
more convenient to have db on the drive, have tracker recognize this,
and present search info to the user as if it were part of the larger
db. sort of a plug-n-play db.

advantages:
- keeps local db slim without info that is used infrequently or never
again.
- keeps tracker from needing to distinguish relevant data in index
from data on media not currently available

obviously wouldnt work with cds/dvds, but the amount of information on
them could be quickly indexed while my 250 GB USB drive would take
quite some time. Would be instantly accessible in tracker with its
own db.
