Hi,
Unfortunately ubuntu is using pulseaudio.
The best solution is to have speech through speech-dispatcher with
native alsa output.
If you want to do serious work with your pc uninstall pulseaudio and
gnomespeech and install speech-dispatcher.
Then blacklist snd-pcm-oss module or delete it completely, if you
don't have a multichannel capable soundcard.

Install esd with alsa module and configure gnome to use it as default.
gnome-sound-properties.
