Wouldn't you know that as soon as I did so (actually, I tagged onto
another bug that appeared to be the same bug), it started to work for
me? The only change I made is I removed the "network-manager-kde"
package (actually, I did it this morning but apparently a reboot was
required) as it seemed to be the only one that had any meat in that was
not directly related to anything I was currently using. Beyond that, it
appeared to be very similar to the package described in these links, but
not quite the same:

http://www.quitebrightlight.com/2009/01/opensuse-111-connection-was-not-provided-by-any-settings-service/
http://www.mail-archive.com/networkmanager-list gnome org/msg10610.html

Additionally, it looks like that package is not actually in the
repository anyplace so perhaps my upgrade should have removed it and
didn't. Very curious.

Also sort of amusing is that my replacement wireless hardware came in
the mail today and I'll be retiring this Ad-Hoc network in favor of a
card that supports master mode. Oh well! Incidentally, I say "started to
work" but actually it is requesting a DHCP address and failing to get
one, even though the other end is allegedly responding with DHCPOFFER.
But at least now it does something (if anyone's ever seen this one
before, I'd be curious, even though it is not going to matter in an hour
or two).
