It was made the default at some point but you have an older release. In
fact your MC is quite old. You might consider upgrading to a recent
snapshot. Snapshots can be found at the following address:

Now I am realy wondering, since on my Debian/Sarge I have

----8<-----------------------------------------------------------------
[michelle konzack michelle1 private:~/] apt-cache policy mc
mc:
 Installiert:1:4.6.0-4.6.1-pre3-3sarge1
 Mögliche Pakete:1:4.6.0-4.6.1-pre3-3sarge1
 Versions-Tabelle:
*** 1:4.6.0-4.6.1-pre3-3sarge1 0
       500 http://192.168.0.75 sarge/main Packages
       200 http://sarge.debian.tamay-dogan.net sarge/main Packages
       100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

and it works for ages. And my older Debian/Woody Workstation
which had a version of 4.5.x I think was working too.

It depends on the ftp server whether it will work or not.
cd_first_then_ls is the safest choice - it was not the
default for quite some time. If you need more information
you might want ot take a look at the developers list archives.

As for you version of MC - no matter what the version string
says it is a snapshot version of MC and is newer then 4.6.1.
