Oh, there IS such a goal. Nice.

How about adding a background thread that will go through the
files in a directory while the other one will show the files
that have been processed so far and will let user to start
working on them? Currently one has to wait until all files
in a directory are processed.

Well, having an option to disable filetype guessing by
opening and reading files could speed up the dialog a lot,
even with its current design.

I agree that using MIME infrastructure in this particular case is
beneficial, however I mentioned firefox and /usr/bin only as an example.
There are other apps that need to open files residing in large directories.
