Great, that worked, thanks Ryan.

Just wondering - where would I have found that info if I hadn't asked on here? i.e. how did you and others know about that? I didn't see reference to this dependency anywhere, so just wondering if there's some of knowledge I'm missing here :)

Is Fontconfig the cairo font backend it thinks isn't there? Doing a "dpkg --get-selections" lists fontconfig, 
fontconfig-config, libfontconfig1:i386 and libfontconfig1-dev as all being installed.
You need fontconfig 2.10.91 or newer.
