Have a look at

http://developer.gnome.org/tools/cvs.html

In your case, open a terminal and write the following:

export CVSROOT=:pserver:anonymous anoncvs gnome org:/cvs/gnome

cvs login
(just press return)

cvs -z3 checkout libegg
