Hello,

in the dialog box for assigning names to cells, there's an entry field "expression".

Firstly try to understand the basic usage of the dialogue box:
For example:
Name => Cost_per_litre
Expression => $B$6
so that you can use cost_per_litre in formulas instead of $B$6.

Does this mean that names for cells can be calculated?

No, it doesn't mean that.

Such as e.g. by looking them up in the first row(s)/column(s) of a sheet?

You may be asking: Does Gnumeric implement so-called "natural language" labels introduced by MS in Excel 97, which if confronted with what could plausibly be defined names (but are not defined) searches through the whole worksheet?

About two minutes experimentation leads me to the conclusion: No, not in Gnumeric 1.6.3 (Windows version).
