If I am not mistaken the "grid mode" you are referring to is gone and is
replaced by the linear mode, where you only see the current workspace. A
sort of grid mode (which sounds great and I'm looking forward to) was
proposed for inclusion in the Shell in:

Though I do not know if it was officially accepted.
