I don't feel gnome shell is bad at all, but some things like not directly getting to the list of favorite apps, like in Unity is an irritant.

The top panel also behaves strangely inconsistent some times.

 

People can't fix what they don't know is broken. I suggest you file a bug about the issue you're finding:
