A stack of layers? Open a blank canvas, say A4 size. Open the files as layers,
Use the align tool to distribute across the canvas.

Then the gmic plugin www.gmic.eu has a montage filter. but not too easy to use.

Rather than a several layers, just open the images and use this script:
