[Gimp-user] Oxidized old photo effect?

How can I create that effect that looks look of oxidized old photos, the black
looking almost metallic, faded? I assume on the old photos it's the silver
oxidizing.

Attached is an image of an old photo, sort of the effect I am after (this image
is also hand tinted in colour)
