Unfortunately the default setup of Windows Explorer, as of Windows XP I think, is to hide file extensions. Many people probably don't even realise file extensions exist, let alone how to show them (or the security implications of not knowing whether they're about to open a .jpg or .exe file!)

For the OP and anyone else who doesn't know: from Windows Explorer open Tools menu (Alt+T for Windows Vista and 7, which also hide the menus by default!) > Folder Options > View > deselect "Hide extensions for known file types" and click OK. The extension is then the part after the last "." in the file name.

More unfortunately, in this case, that still doesn't seem to help since extensions are still hidden in the special Fonts folder... but File > Properties > General does shows the extension in brackets after the file type - e.g. "Font File (.fon)" or "TrueType Font File (.ttf)" - or at least it does on the Windows Vista system I'm on at the moment...

Looks like the original problem is solved anyway.
