I'm not sure why that would be: is it because your server admins don't
allow sending mail via IMAP? I can send mail via IMAP to our Exchange
2007 server and it works.

I will take a look at the mapi back end. Does it come with documentation
on how to set up accounts?

No need for documentation. After you install the appropriate Evo
backend package, to go Edit -> Preferences in Evo and add a new account,
and select the account type "Exchange MAPI". Fill in the appropriate
values for the server and username etc. as normal. It should be fairly
straightforward but ask if you get lost.

Ive never been able to get evolution mapi or evolution exchange working
to exchange 2003! - evo ver 2.26, I have just upgraded to gnome 2.28 and
will retry it again soon, but dont hold out much hope.

IMAP support is for reading mail, not sending.

The institution I am trying to connect to also requires you use an ISP
to send mail when off-campus - part of trying to stop spammers and
relays is to accept mail from on-campus only.

Lastly, DavMail is a working solution for evolution and exchange. You
connect to it using IMAP and SMTP and it talks to exchange on your
behalf over OWA.
