Dunno for sure but I think you should start gpilotd BEFORE clicking on
the hotsync button.  It's different from pilot-link.  gpilotd waits for
a connection on the specified device, so you should start it a few
seconds before clicking on the hotsync button.  Just a wild guess.

Background: Trying to sync a Visor with evo 1.2 using the USB port;
stock RH 7.3 w/Ximian Gnome. The sync operation worked with 1.08 both
using giplotd started from the command line and running as a daemon.

The above output is the result of using Settings...:Pilot Link:Devices
to select Serial instead of USB, then hitting the hot sync button and
then immediately running gpilotd.
