METADATA LIBRARIAN

RESPONSIBILITIES: The University of Alabama Libraries is seeking a
dynamic, highly motivated individual for the position of Metadata
Librarian.  Reporting to the Head of Cataloging & Metadata Services (CMS),
the metadata librarian plays an important role in the Libraries'
digital program.  This position works closely with Digital Services and
the other metadata librarian in CMS to support the discovery of and access
to UA Libraries digital content through metadata creation, analysis,
enrichment, and maintenance;  collaboratively develop policy and best
practices for descriptive, technical, preservation, and administrative
metadata and maintain documentation; track developments in metadata
standards of all types (descriptive, technical, preservation, and
administrative) to recommend and design appropriate metadata schema for
discovery and access; keep abreast of  issues and trends in digital
libraries and repositories and their impact on metadata standards;
coordinate with constituencies within and outside the Libraries on
metadata issues; and serve as metadata expert and provide metadata
training and technical assistance.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:  MLS/MLIS from an ALA-accredited program or
equivalent; knowledge of metadata schema such as Dublin Core, EAD, VRA
Core, MODS, METS, etc. and content standards and controlled vocabularies;
experience with applying metadata standards to describe digital
collections using CONTENTdm or other digital management system(s);
demonstrated understanding of all aspects of  metadata; familiarity with
the OAIS reference model; demonstrated ability to work independently, as
well as collaboratively with diverse constituencies; effective oral,
written and interpersonal communication skills; evidence of ability to
meet University requirements for promotion and tenure.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 1-2 years experience working in digital
projects; experience in database design, cross-walking, XSLT, and
scripting.

Association of Research Libraries, SPARC, the Center for Research
Libraries, the Coalition for Networked Information, SOLINET, and the
Network of Alabama Academic Libraries. The Libraries use Ex Libris'

SALARY/BENEFITS:  12-month tenure track appointment.  Rank and salary
commensurate with qualifications and experience.  Strong benefits
