[xslt] OT: free native xml db ?

Hi all

For a java environment there is the XIndice XML
Database, but is there also a good XML Database that
does not require a JVM?

I'm working with Python and PHP. At the Moment my XML
Documents are stored in the Filesystem. If people are
reading and writing documents at the same time, there
are some problems to solve in my applications that
could be done using a DB. 

Is there a XML Database based on libxml, libxslt ?
Do you use XML db's written in C,C++ (not java)?
