thanks! it works, but shows another problem. If we take as input

<a><a/><a/><a><a/><a/></a></a>

and XSL

  <xsl:template match="/">
    <xsl:for-each select=".//*">
      <xsl:number format="1" level="multiple"/>:
    </xsl:for-each>
  </xsl:template>

then libxslt offers

    11:
    12:
    13:
    131:
    132:


instead of 

    1.1:
    1.2:
    1.3:
    1.3.1:
    1.3.2:

as given by other processors.
