Thanks for the pointer.  After reading through that script, changing my LDFLAGS to 
LDFLAGS="-L${PWD}/../install/lib -Wl,--export-all" solved the issue.

https://github.com/MythTV/packaging/blob/master/Win32/mythbuild.sh seems to blame it on --without-threads, 
for what it's worth. You might want to contact the author of that script about it.
