The included mapfile (libxml2.syms) doesn't seem to work.
You can get past the build errors if you disable using the
mapfile in configure.in:

-    VERSION_SCRIPT_FLAGS="-Wl,-M -Wl,"
+    VERSION_SCRIPT_FLAGS=""
AC_SUBST(VERSION_SCRIPT_FLAGS)

Don't forget to run autoconf to regenerate configure.
