I'll add 2 cents more. If it is possible in your situation, you might
look into doing this with XSLT. I do something like this and it's really
not that hard. I apply the XSL stylesheet using the libxslt facilities.
The initial example provided external entities as well balanced but
multirooted fragments, i.e. they are not XML, so without modification
to the documents, nor XInclude nor XSLT would work since they assume
XML documents and won't work with well-balanced fragments.
