[xml] ampersand in html

Sorry for a dumb question, but I don't know how to
prevent libxml2 to transform "&" into "&" when
using 
htmlDocContentDumpFormatOutput( )

I need   to be sent to html browser (not a blank
space but literally " ", so that html table cells
are properly formatted and displayed). however, the
dump function turns it into   

Is there a way to do this ?

I am using libxml2 2.6.3 on win32 (XP pro).
