[xml] libc problems - how to static link the library

Hello,

I am trying to use the excellent libxml2 in an Apache
DSO module.  I'm running into all kinds of linking
problems with this.  I think what I need to do is make
up a libxml.a which contains all the static things
that it needs before I link it in with my code.  I
linked in libc.a, and now Apache coredumps when it
tries to malloc.  Could it be that the malloc in libc
is interfering?  As you can probably see, this is a
bit out of my league to sort this out.
