[xml] CVS compilations - heads up

Hi all,

  For some time now, the script autogen.sh has required version 1.4
of the automake utils.  After some reports of people being unable
to run the script because their systems had later versions of
these utils installed, I have changed the script to run whatever
the user has installed as his default.  If this adversely affects
anyone, please let me know (preferably before the next release :)
