Works for me ...
orchis:~/XML -> cat tst.xml
<personen>
<person name="foo">
<street>...</street>
</person>
<person name="bar">
<street>...</street>
</person>
</personen>
orchis:~/XML -> xmllint --shell tst.xml
/ > cd /personen
personen > cd /personen/person
/personen/person is a 2 Node Set
personen > cd /personen/person[ name="bar"]
person > pwd
//personen/person[2]
person > exit
orchis:~/XML ->
Hard to debug something I can't reproduce.
