[xml] problem building libxml2-2.3.10

I have been unable to build libxml2, version 2.3.10.  After running ./configure
(with no extra options), make failed with the following output:

gcc -g -O2 -Wall -o .libs/xmllint xmllint.o -lreadline -lhistory -lncurses
./.libs/libxml2.so -lz -lm -lz -lm
-Wl,--rpath -Wl,/usr/local/lib
./.libs/libxml2.so: undefined reference to ibiconv_open'
./.libs/libxml2.so: undefined reference to ibiconv_close'
./.libs/libxml2.so: undefined reference to ibiconv'
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make[2]: *** [xmllint] Error 1

If it is relevant, I am using kernel 2.4.4 and libiconv 1.6.1 (installed at the
default /usr/local/lib).

Any help will be appreciated.
