As I said: if the application breaks, or interaction with a window manager
will break, MUST is appropriate...

If that is true in the case you are discussing, then MUST it should be.

There is some judgement involved in all of this.  And I'm not watching
the spec at that level of detail.

My only points are to be rigorous in the terminology, and no more demanding
than actually necessary.  This all comes from experience with specs in
the IETF, where they've many many years of interoperable implementations.
