It would be nice if the error message were less convoluted... (Instead of
talking
about the .c generated filed, it talked about the vala code in which the
error originates.


The use of the --debug switch with valac will include debugging information in the binary 
so the Vala source line is shown when an assertion fails. Try valac --debug test.vala
