Thanks for getting back to me so quickly.
Yes I see, it's been more tightly integrated into gnome, that was a
good move I think.
the first thing we need is a list of keyboards, this should tell us
what the multimedia profile is, things in the system to look out for
when auto detecting (usb ids ect) and other information including
maybe an image.
you should then be able to select maker / model from some drop downs
or go for a custom keyboard which you can set all the keys.
then we can use this information either as a package that would have
frequent updates or as an online service.
depending on the method used custom keyboards should be saved and
uploaded on a website somewhere central so everyone can see what has
already been done and they can be included in future package releases
if thats the method we use.
have you got the email for Sergey, perhaps we should discuss this with him?

Hey Martin,
ACME is now officially dead, as the functionality has been integrated in
the GNOME control-center, in the keyboard shortcuts section.
Even better, we can now use more than single keys to bind to actions,
ie. we can use key combinations as opposed to single keys.
Sergey is the maintainer for libxkb and the layout setup part of the
GNOME control-center. I am sure he would be interested in getting some
auto-detection working in the setup tools, to reduce the amount of work
one has to do to set everything up properly.
I would recommend:
- detecting which layout is the best for each keyboard (a new property
in HAL?)
- have the GNOME bits automatically setup the right layout
- (very hard, I guess), having a tool to help setup the extra keys, for
inclusion into the keyboard data package.
Comments?

People say to me you're typecast, and frankly I am typecast. But I
always looked at that as, at least I'm being cast. -- Rob Schneider
