Re: [Usability] Desktop/Nautilus Usability Enhancement Idea: Icon sheets

Your solution is on file level and pretty good. I wish it is possible. I also use 4 workspaces 1 for mail&pidgin, 2 for work and 1 for media.

My feature request helps when you can not separate files to different folders. If you should live in a single folder and need to work the feature I defined is very helpful. For example, you have a folder full of files but you need to work on files (lots of pictures for example). You can assign icons to sheets and then control the sheet visibility. It is like tagging each icon with the sheet name but sheets are more helpful I think. Especially when moving a group of icons at the same time.

Is my feature request sound? Can it help gnome users? I am just curious about this idea. What if it is implemented on gnome first and so on:)

By the way, this is my second post in this mailing list. I am writing here to state my idea that may be helpful. I could not find a way to issue feature request and wrote my idea here.

Thanks,
Murat Yukselen

Can assigning a different folder (Desktop1, Desktop2, etc) for each workspace be possible?
If so, we can sort and keep files for each workspace. i think this is more logical for the idea of workspaces.

example, i use a cube with four workspaces.
i can then use the workspace 1 for 'work', workspace 2 for 'Media', 3 for 'games', etc.

could this then allow us to use different wallpaper for each of them?
(without relying on the compiz wallpaper plugin?)

Hello,

I have an idea on organizing icons. May be this idea is expressed before but I could not find.

Many people like to place icons on the desktop and organize them. Some could not organize well but like to keep them all on desktop and see everything.

My idea is to introduce users sheets to place on top of desktops mainly. But since this idea will be implemented in nautilus, every folder can use this helper.

Here is the use case:
User will be able to define a geometry as a sheet basically and customize it. The sheet can have different transparent colors, textures and so on. Each icon on the desktop can be placed on a sheet helping user to meaningfully organize icons on sheets. For example user likes to group his game shortcuts with documents on to a blue "Gaming" sheet and group development shortcuts onto other "Tools" sheet and projects onto the other "workspace" sheet. User will be able to tidy the icons on a single sheet and also move the sheets on the desktop freely. User will also be able to set sheet visibility further. Also the sheet visibility configuration can be mapped with users precense state.

Idea of using a sheet for organizing icons may be handy. I do not know the impact on usability. If it is implemented anywhere before but sometimes I wish I could organize my icons with a basic method like this.

Murat Yukselen
