Add a second workspace switcher to your panel. Configure it with the
same layout as the origianl workspace switcher, and to only show the
current workspace, and to show the names. This will show you the name
of only the current workspace.

Until someone can show me a reasonable UI for how to set the desktop
background of different workspaces, this is not going to happen.

It is not the right forum, as you are simply blindly requesting
features, rather than discussing the usability aspect of how those
features would be implemented, and suggesting methods for doing so. And,
this forum is for the discussion of usability issues and solutions in
GNOME, not for users to request features on. The proper forum for
feature requests is bugzilla.
