When it works, MIDI is awesome.  However, for some reason, the MIDI
Synth in my cards (an AD1816 in one machine, an i810-thingie in
another) don't work with ALSA or OSS; the only way I can play MIDIs is
via Timidity.  I use Linux 2.6.8.  WAV/OGGs work just fine, though.  A
real shame.

OGG seems like the perfect tradeoff, when (if?) it is supported.
