On Ubuntu 5.04 I:
* emacs /usr/share/applications/gnome-terminal.desktop
* restart X
* applications->system tools->terminal right click->add to panel
* moved to the panel I like
* opened nautilus home dir
* dragged subdir to launcher
* gnome-terminal opened in home dir :-(
