When a user opens his home in Nautilus directory he will see his Desktop
folder inside it.
But he may also see the contents of that folder on the desktop, provided
his Nautilus window
doesnt cover the entire screen.
This sort of breaks the spatialness of Nautilus. The user could be led
to believe that the files
in the folder representation is a duplicate of what he sees on the real
desktop and decide to
delete them, naturally resulting in loss of data.
To make things worse, the Desktop folder is always named Desktop when
shown inside
a Nautilus window, but when it is referred to in the places menu and in
tooltips of the show
desktop applet the name is translated.
This means that a user using an internationalized version of Gnome may
not realize that
he is deleting his desktop if he deletes the "Desktop" folder.
To prevent risk of losing data I would suggest hiding the Desktop folder
in Nautilus and just let the users
se the files on the actual desktop.
