So what's wrong with the type-ahead find that's in GTK+ 2.5?  As you
type, the first matching entry is selected.  So if you type 's', the
first file starting with 's' is selected.  Then you type 'i', and the
first file starting with 'si' is selected.  You type just enough to get
to the file you want (or begin using arrow keys when you've gotten close
enough, if you like), and hit Enter when you're on the file you want.
