It's possibly of marginal use, but knowing whether a file is read-only
or not is never going to cause you to lose any data (unless the app lets
you modify read-only files to save under a different name, in which case
the modified indicator should kick in anyway).

Of course, an app should always ask you if you want to save
modifications before it closes anyway, so the usefulness (rather than
the warm-fuzziness) of the modified indicator itself is possibly a bit
questionable anyway... except perhaps in an auto-saving app, but then
you could question whether it should ever appear at all.
