I agree completely with Reinout. This is my first post here, but I
worked briefly on an application right along these lines. It seems to
be permanently stalled right now. It did some of the things that you
mention, and my notes on it basically include everything you mention.

The code for it is here, its in python, which was the main problem I
had with it, it only worked for me about 30% of the time. The other
problem with it was I'm not really much of a programer, and while I
was able to add a couple of features that I wanted to it, nautilus
style mouse click behavior, dnd bookmark adding, etc, I wasn't able to
make it have a automatically generated tree view, which was the most
important feature.

The development discussion of the project was originally in the
