I just recently had my first encounter with Gnome2, and I have found on aspect of the gui that is particularily confusing to a new user.
The problem is the icon on the close button in any of the gnome settings dialogues. The 'X' icon implies that changes made in the dialogue will be cancelled when the button is pushed, and thus there appears to be no way to keep the settings without leaving the window open.
My suggestion would be to simply replace this icon with a check-mark or equivalent.
