Apart from a few throwaway remarks (deaf people might not be able to use your application if a feature relies solely on sound) there is no formal discussion, in the HIG, of the use of sound.
There should be - my post was prompted by hearing the "you've got email" (I paraphrase!) notification in balsa (2.0.10). Which:
i. appears not to be capable of being turned off, at least not through the Balsa UI;
ii. could cause offence.
I am willing to contribute a paragraph or two should it be felt necessary :)
